As the hours turned into days, tension inside the house steadily increased. The German commander demanded our surrender several times, but it was obvious that he had no idea how he was going to get us out of the house. On the third night of the siege he resorted to blaring classical music at us. It did not really bother me since I only needed a few hours of sleep per night anyway, but the lack of rest took its toll on the other members of the squad. I found Private Mancini pacing in the living room and muttering to himself as I emerged from one of the bedrooms early in the morning of the fourth day of the standoff. Sarge had proven to be ineffective at raising the moral of his troops, so I took it upon myself to engage the soldier from Brooklyn.

“I don’t know much about you, Mancini,” I began. “You have a sweetheart back home?”

“I did,” Mancini said as he continued to pace. “But I found out before I left for this mission that the bitch is sleeping with another man, a 4-F.”

“Hum,” I said in disappointment. “How about family? Are you close with your family?”

“My brother is the one who she has been cheating on me with,” Mancini clarified.

“Ouch. How about career prospects?” I pivoted. “Do you have a job lined up when you get back home?”

“My dad wants me to take over the family farm,” Mancini muttered.

“That sounds like it would be nice,” I said.

“Not really,” he countered. “I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I don’t know shit about agriculture. Plus I have an unnatural fear of livestock and terrible allergies.”

“Any hobbies?” I tried.

“Nope,” Mancini answered. “I have absolutely nothing to live for.”

“You sure don’t,” I agreed. I patted his shoulder reassuringly. “Don’t worry, son. You are definitely going to survive this war.”

“I’m sick of this goddamn slop,” Sarge declared as he entered the living room. He threw the fork he had been holding down to emphasize his point. “If I have to eat another K-ration I’m going to blow my brains out.”

Lucy emerged from the kitchen and shot Sarge a puzzled look. There was an apple in her left hand, and she had to finishing chewing and swallow before she could address him. “The fruit back there hasn’t turned yet. Even when it does we won’t have to worry about food for a few weeks. The pantry is overflowing with stuff to eat. You don’t have to choke down those K-rations.”

“Don’t bother,” Mancini said to Lucy as he bit the top off of one of his fingernails. “The mook would rather have something to complain about.”

“How about you, Nick,” Lucy asked me with concern. “Do you need to eat something... or someone?”

“I’ll be fine,” I answered.

“You sure? You could always eat that German prisoner Fritz or Karl or whatever the hell his name is,” she suggested.

“Nah, I wouldn’t feel right about it. He’s Wehrmacht not SS,” I explained.

“What’s the difference?” Lucy inquired. She nodded greetings as most of the rest of the squad entered the room with their breakfasts.
